Waiting for changes to be applied (again)

I’m having the stupid Waiting for changes to be applied when synchronizing my iPad. Again.

Here’s a potential cause:

We have multiple iPhoto libraries on this computer. My default iPhoto library is “Alex iPhoto Library” but today I started to synchronize the iPad and iTunes told me that it would wipe all the photos on my iPad but that all the photos on my iPad would be unaffected. Huh!? I decided to not synchronize photos and proceeded. After the sync I verified that the checkbox for synchronizing photos was no longer checked. I started iPhoto and realized that it started with “Claudia iPhoto Library”. I switched the library: quit iPhoto and press Alt while starting it again – what an idiot user interface! Discoverability? 0%! Then I went back to iTunes, checked the sync photo checkbox again and started the synchronization again. It has been stuck for seven minutes “waiting for changes to be applied.”

Thrice cursed bug of a castrated wolf howling at street lights!

I’ll following my own advice I gave myself three weeks ago: Just restore the stupid thing.

I hate doing this.

I totally expect there to be problems with all the apps containing downloadable content such as all the tables for my beloved Pinball Arcade.

Update: The next day, the reset is complete. A message greets me saying that over 6000 objects could not be synchronized and that more info would be available in iTunes. No such info is available in iTunes, of course.

I quickly try to sync the iPad again, and guess what? “Waiting for changes to be applied!” I wait some more. And suddenly: “Copying photo 1 of 12695!” Wow, perhaps this will work after all! After a while a message tells that over 3000 objects could not be synchronized and that more info would be available in iTunes. No such info is available in iTunes, of course. But the number has decreased. I feel encouraged.

I quickly try to sync the iPad again but no more progress is made. The photos synchronized end sometime in 2011. Will try to reboot the iPad and retry. Time passes. “Waiting for changes to be applied.” This makes me so tired.

Against all odds and after waiting what looks like an hour, the message has changed from “Waiting for changes to be applied” to “Copying photo 453 of 3271!” Patience is key. I also checked the “include videos” checkbox in the Photos section because I wanted the videos as wall and because I felt that maybe I should change something in order to trigger the synchronization again as it was quietly failing before. Perhaps that wasn’t necessary and the simple reboot and the extra patience after that was enough.

For the record and in case anybody stumbles over this page in the coming years: I’m using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and a first generation iPad and I’m synchronizing more than 20’000 photos which take around 15GB.

Tags: iPad Apple Gadgets

Waiting for changes to be applied (iPad)

I’m not sure whether I had this problem before. Ever since importing a few photos yesterday I can no longer sync my iPad with iTunes. The last step is Waiting for changes to be applied and it takes forever.

I’m thinking that maybe I need to “Restore” the iPad. This will take many hours—and I have already wasted a few hours trying to find a solution without restoring from backup. Let this serve as a note to my future self that it didn’t work. Just restore the stupid thing.

Even if this means waiting for 16.4G of photos and 32.3GB of apps (mostly PDFs for GoodReader).

Tags: iPad Apple Gadgets

New Phone, New SIM, New Number

I extended my mobile phone contract and got myself a new phone. It requires a micro SIM, which I also got. The micro SIM uses a different phone number. Whaaaat? I didn’t want to change my phone number. What stupidity is this?

Now I have to walk to a shop, wait in line, talk to some dude, and try to get this resolved. Orange, I don’t like this.

Update: A call to the help line and they did some stuff to their configurations, told me to sync and reboot, and everything will be fine. Apparently the old phone (or just it’s SIM card) will wipe itself shortly. Now I understand how they can’t just do this carelessly. I just wish that they had written a letter to go along with the phone explaining how to proceed.

Tags: Phone Gadgets

Xubuntu 11.04

Upgrading my old iBook to Xubuntu 11.04 after not having used it for many months was no problem!

Out of curiosity I installed Unity only to be told that my hardware to was too lame to run it. Installing it had the unfortunate side-effect of getting the Nautilus file manager again. Thus, whenever I started a session, the blue Xfce session manager (gdm?) background would be replaced by the rust brown background used by Nautilus for a second, until it was again replaced by the blue background of the Xfce file manager Thunar. I went back to my old post, 2010-07-24 Ubuntu to Xubuntu. I ended up removing
nautilus
and some dependencies, verified that
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
had nothing to remove and ran
sudo apt-get autoremove
. Let’s restart and check.

Tags: Mac iBook Gadgets Ubuntu Xubuntu

New Compact Camera

I thinking of buying a new camera. I took some pictures with my Wikipedia:single-lens reflex camera (a Pentax K100D). While biking in Mauritius, I finally decided that the camera was too bulky. I need something smaller to put in a pocket and possibly take pictures while riding my bike.

Any suggestions?

A friend recently bought a Sony DSCTX5, and he got an recommendation for a Nikon p7000, but I’m not sure…

Update: I bought a Sony DSC-HX5V. I noticed that you need “GPS assist” data on the camera, which you can download using the Windows-only PBM application. Booooh! Luckily I found a way to do it manually and a gpsassist-update monitor that will download it anytime I mount an appropriate memory card.

Right now, however, I have a small problem: the assist data is marked as invalid with an expiry date of 2010-12-13 – 2011-1-11 which seems plausible. Weird!

Update: I got a signal at last! Had to carry it around with power-saving turned off for about a quarter of an hour.

Update: If the GPS assist data is no longer downloaded automatically, verify that the directory
Private/SONY/GPS/
exists on the memory card. Create it manually, if necessary.

Tags: Gadgets Pictures

Apple Airport Grumbling

Thought of everything. Got iPhone. Got iPad. Got charger. Got Airport Express for wireless network. Used it. Loved it. Came back to the hotel room, tried to use iPad, got network error. Rebooted router and tried to reconnect. The fucker had forgotten the password!

Using the iPhone to rant, at the moment. Will try to look for the password somewhere online. Stupid me for using a non-trivial password. Stupid Apple for not including a web interface. And no app to do it from the iPhone as far as I know.

Update: Thank you friends who come over and use their laptops at my place. They can send the network password to my iPhone.

Tags: Apple Gadgets Fail

iPad requires Mac OS 10.5

As you probably know, our Mac Mini still runs Mac OS 10.4. Today I got my iPad. Plugged it in. Started iTunes.

The iPad “iPad” cannot be used because it requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

I think I’m going to be angry again.

Tags: iPad Apple Gadgets Mac

iPad Alternative

I’ve enjoyed my iPhone as an always-on portable web browser. It hasn’t worked so well for reading books. Would the iPad work?

It looks nice.

I like my iPhone; the iPad is similar.

The iPhone I got was a present from my employer. I’ll have to buy the iPad myself.

Wifi, 3G, 64GB – CHF 1,049.00!? That’s expensive for a locked-down device.

I think using 3G with the iPad costs extra and isn’t included in my iPhone plan.

I guess my problem is that the iPad is bigger and starts to look and cost like a general purpose computer. Suddenly I feel like I should be enjoying more rights.

What are my alternatives? What compromises do I need to make?

Tags: iPad Apple Gadgets

Flickering Screen

Gaaah! I wanted to sit at the laptop and catch with my Google Reader – and find that my screen is flickering! Damn it. Does this herald the end of my beloved hardware – mere weeks after I finally installed Ubuntu on the iBook? Or has Ubuntu destroyed my monitor!?

The scary thing is that things seem much improved if I switch from 1024×768 to 800×600.

Update: Well, today it seems to be gone again. I wonder what that was about!

Tags: Gadgets iBook Ubuntu
