This is why I like the Oddmuse channel on Freenode so much…

16:51  CapnDan

Honestly I don’t understand why people get so religious about different versions of Unix.

16:52  kensanata

Everybody likes to imagine that their decision was rational.

16:52  kensanata

Therefore they infuse the first decision and the facts that influenced it with overproportional importance.

16:52  kensanata

NETBSD IS THE ONLY SECURE OPERATING SYSTEM!!!!

16:53  CapnDan

yeah, there’s a name for that, I was reading about it a few months ago.

16:53  CapnDan

A popular psychology word from last year.

16:53  kensanata

“Moron Syndrome”?

16:53  CapnDan

lol

(Dan later discovers that the term he was looking for is cognitive inertia.)

Tags: Oddmuse  IRC

Add Identica Account to Bitlbee

I’m using IRC via Bitlbee to do instant messaging in Emacs. I’ve been using the ui-fix branch of Bitlbee. Here’s how to add an Identi.ca account:

    account add twitter kensanata foo
    account list
    account 6 set base_url http://identi.ca/api
    account 6 set mode chat
    account 6 set oauth false
    save
    account 6 on

Instead of “6” you need to use the correct account number.

If you already have a Twitter account with the same handle, one of the two will be called #chat_000 instead of #identica_kensanata – join us on #bitlbee @ freenode and help us fix it.

Update: I’ve been working on a patch attached to ticket #648 (using Twitter and Identica accounts with the same username) to add support for an Identica protocol.

    account add identica kensanata foo
    account identica set mode chat
    save
    account identica on

Update: A modified form of my patch has been applied.

Tags: IRC  Bitlbee  Emacs

Compile Bitlbee UI-fix branch on Mac OS 10.4

Yeah, I know. Why the hell am I still using Mac OS 10.4 instead of upgrading – or moving to a Debian system? I dunno!

So I was trying to compile the ui-fix branch for BitlBee. It includes the killerbee branch, so it uses libpurple and all that.

http://code.bitlbee.org/wilmer/ui-fix/ – which requires xmlto…

http://cyberelk.net/tim/software/xmlto/ – for the documentation, which requires getopt, gettext, and docbook…

http://software.frodo.looijaard.name/getopt/ – to build xmlto; I also had to use
LDFLAGS=-lintl
in the Makefile to compile it.

http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/ – I already had gettext 0.17 installed, which is where libintl comes from

next is… the nightmare that is docbook!!

I wasted a lot of time on this.

This is so sad.

The sun was shining, too.

I was unable to find something prepackaged for me. So I started to follow the instructions in DocBook XSL: The Complete Guide.

Installing the DocBook DTD – xmlto doesn’t use the latest one so I got version 4.2 – http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbook-xml-4.2.zip and unpacked it. I wanted everything in
/usr/local/share/xml
so that’s what I did –
sudo mv docbook-xml-4.2 /usr/local/share/xml
…

Installing the DocBook stylesheets – so now we need stylesheets to create the manpages. I got the following file: http://sourceforge.net/projects/docbook/files/docbook-xsl-ns/1.75.2/docbook-xsl-ns-1.75.2.tar.bz2/download and used
sudo mv docbook-xsl-ns-1.75.2 /usr/local/share/xml
…

How to write an XML catalog file – next I needed to write the catalog for the minimum stuff I needed. I created a the file
/usr/local/share/xml/docbook.cat
with the following content:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<catalog  xmlns="urn:oasis:names:tc:entity:xmlns:xml:catalog">
  <group  prefer="public"  xml:base="file:///usr/local/share/xml/" >
    <public
       publicId="-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.2//EN"
       uri="docbook-xml-4.2/docbookx.dtd"/>
    <rewriteURI
       uriStartString="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/"
       rewritePrefix="docbook-xsl-ns-1.75.2/" />
  </group>
</catalog>

I set the environment variable in my .bashrc:
export XML_CATALOG_FILES=/usr/local/share/xml/docbook.cat
.

And with that,
make xmlto
and
make bitlbee
worked!

Tags: Mac IRC Bitlbee Emacs DocBook

Show Only rcirc Buffers

The following function will replace whatever you are looking at with all your rcirc targets (channels and query buffers). It turns out that with 13 channels I’m already reaching a limit on this display. Bummer!

(defun rcirc-only ()
  (interactive)
  (let (channels)
    (dolist (buf (buffer-list))
      (with-current-buffer buf

	  (setq channels (cons buf channels)))))
    (delete-other-windows)

	(window--display-buffer-2 buf (selected-window)))

I hang out on the EmacsChannel and other channels practically every working day.

I sometimes kick people from the Emacs channel on IRC. Often I am dragged into long discussions of whether I abused my power or not.

Then I get stuff like this:

16:59 !!! consolers sent unsupported ctcp: FUCKOFFANDDIE
14:57 !!! consolers sent unsupported ctcp: EATSHITANDDIE

/  ?

Tags: Emacs  IRC

Bitlbee Again

It turned out to be trivial to download and install Bitlbee from source. Then I used bitlbee.el to start it from within Emacs instead of trying to have it run all the time. In fact, the following seems to work just fine:

(autoload 'bitlbee-start "bitlbee" t)
(setq bitlbee-executable "/usr/local/sbin/bitlbee")

(global-set-key (kbd "C-c e")
		(lambda ()
		  (interactive)
		  (bitlbee-start); needs time to start up
		  (run-with-idle-timer 1 nil 'rcirc nil)))

Don’t forget to add an appropriate entry to rcirc-server-alist and rcirc-authinfo.

Quick setup for myself:

account add oscar "kensanata" "*secret*"
account add oscar "98129982" "*secret*"
account add jabber "kensanata@gmail.com" "*secret*"
account set jabber/ssl true
account set jabber/server talk.google.com
account set jabber/port 5223
save
account on

Using account set was new to me. And having to use port 5223 instead of 5222 was weird, too. But now it seems to work. Yeah! I ended up not using ELIM and jabber.el, which is why I wanted to give Bitlbee another try.

Tags: Emacs  IRC

Plans for fsbot

11:49  kensanata

It would be cool if we could join #fsbot and tell fsbot what to say on #emacs.

11:49  kensanata

Then newbies would go bonkers a dozen a minute.

11:55  kensanata

Fsbot is already exhibiting a lot of artificial stupidity, sometimes he tricks people.

12:17  kensanata

I don’t care what the bots look like on the inside.

12:19  kensanata

It would be cool if we could look inside fsbot and see the #fsbot channel members listed.

12:19  kensanata

Then we’d know who was controlling it.

12:20  kensanata

Plus we’d prevent people from remote controlling fsbot via msg and queries.

12:20  kensanata

Then we get back social control which is important.

12:21  kensanata

If fsbot starts spewing insults, I want a way to figure out who is doing it and stop it.

12:21  kensanata

Requiring remote control to come from #fsbot would allow for that.

12:23  kensanata

I don’t think logging is required for what I want to do, since I don’t require perfect accountability.

12:24  kensanata

All I want to do is this: fsbot starts insulting me. I join #fsbot. I see dUm6455 saying “tell #emacs kensanata uses vi!”. Then I can kickban dUm6455…

12:25  kensanata

If dUm6455 only insults me once, and parts #fsbot after the first message, then too bad, he got away. No problem.

12:25  kensanata

It’s like real life. Physics cuts us some slack.

12:26  kensanata

Maybe people will start ignoring fsbot because of his lousy signal-to-noise ratio?

12:27  kensanata

My solution would forgive one-time offenders.

12:27  kensanata

After the first insult I’d be monitoring #fsbot and I need no longer need a log, long or short.

12:28  kensanata

If this turns out to be a problem I’m sure it will be easy to add.

12:28  kensanata

I just don’t like monitoring to a system that doesn’t need it. We have enough watchers in our lives already.

12:29  kensanata

We need one of those rare saviours, those holy men of free software, a true martyr, A VOLUNTEER!

Tags: IRC  Emacs

Decline of Civility

I find that I hardly enjoy the conversation on the EmacsChannel anymore. There’s five people on my ignore list at work. There was nobody on my ignore list at home but now there is.

A few days ago I wrote about the dilemma of operators that use an IgnoreList on Community Wiki.

Looking back on my Emacs history, I realize how I started out reading EmacsNewsgroups (searching for my name on Google Groups [1] shows 1,240 matches…) to reading emacs-devel (on of the EmacsMailingLists), to IRC and EmacsWiki…

Tags: IRC Emacs

Bugs coming back to haunt you

Overheard on the EmacsChannel:

04:13  user

hi. remember that bug we once fixed in the IRC client that made the cursor jump to the article buffer in the mail client (from the summary buffer) when the IRC client was loaded?

04:14  developer

That sounds freaky. We did fix that one?

04:15  user

yeah. actually you fixed that in a wink

04:16  developer

Sounds like a bug in the buffer creation.

04:16  user

i’m not sure, but it could be somewhere the mode-line was being touched… or something like that

04:16  developer

Heh. Ok. What about it?

04:16  user

well, it’s back

Tags: IRC Humor Emacs
