It has been a year since my last podcast list. I still walk to work and back, each trip taking maybe half an hour. I enjoy listening to podcasts while I walk.

RPG:

The Canon Puncture Show – I still like the show. The Game Advocates episodes have inspired me to push for certain games in our all systems considered biweekly group.

Fear the Boot – Good entertainment; I’m not sure I actually learn much by listening, but I like them anyway.

2d6 Feet in a Random Direction – Rarely updated but always interesting.

3.5 Private Sanctuary – D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder RPG win.

Happy Jacks RPG Podcast – they answer emails and talk about stuff. There’s a lot of burping and drinking.

Humanities:

The History of Rome – I haven’t listened to the podcast in a long time. There are 61 episodes queued up.

In Our Time – This continues to be the most awesome mix of science, philosophy and history.

Norman Centuries – I love these, even though episodes are rare and short.

Thinking Allowed – Social science.

Music:

Sounds! – Eclectic music, Swiss radio.
Podcast Update

It has been seven month since my last podcast list. I still walk to work and back, each trip taking maybe half an hour. I enjoy listening to podcasts while I walk.

The Canon Puncture Show – I still like the show. The Game Advocates episodes have inspired me to push for certain games in our all systems considered biweekly group.

Chronicles – I’m still listening to this Pathfinder discussion, review and interviews show. Episodes are around 4h long, which is terrifying. Once I start listening to an episode, that’s not a problem. I just continue listening where I left off. But I must confess that it scares me off when I haven’t listened to them in a while. The spoilerific section is always elicits mixed feelings: Should I skip it and hope that GM James runs it for us? Or should I keep listening? I also happen to think that podcast hosts should use their real names and not some forum nicknames.

Fear the Boot – I’m still not sure what attracts me to the podcast. I keep listening anyway.

The History of Rome – I haven’t listened to the podcast in a long time. There are 26 episodes queued up.

In Our Time – This continues to be the most awesome mix of science, philosophy and history.

Material World – I’m not too happy with it, but not unhappy enough to stop listening.

Norman Centuries – I love these, even though episodes are rare and short.

Roll For Initiative – I’m starting to loose interest in old school D&D podcasts. I can’t really say why. It’s just not as captivating. Not funny enough? Not informative enough? Not short enough? I’d try producing shorter episodes, maybe.

RPG Circus – Still an interesting mix of topics. I guess the inherent tension of having old school, 4E, and Rifts on the podcast keeps me interested.

Save or Die – Similar to the RFI podcast, I find that my interest is waning. I’d love to provide some advice, but I don’t have any. Perhaps explore new territory: This is what happened in our last game, this is how we resolved it, use these examples of play as starting points for a discussion of rules, monsters, and magic items? That would provide some insight into the various modes of play for old school play.

Sounds! – Eclectic music, Swiss radio. Win.

Thinking Allowed – Social science good. But I haven’t listened to it in a while.

2d6 Feet in a Random Direction – I like their discussion of products, their retail perspective, and the tension between old and new school.

3.5 Private Sanctuary – D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder RPG win. (Currently on hiatus!)

Any podcasts you are listening to you’d like to recommend?

I’d also like to promote the One Page Dungeon Contest 2011 via podcasts.
Podcast Update

It has been about five months since my last podcast list, I guess I’m a month early. Some more things have changed. I’ve noticed that I’m shying away from podcasts with episodes reaching two hours. I remember that the Order 66 podcast had such long episodes. There’s really no rational argument for it, after all I don’t listen to podcasts for hours. I do it while shopping, walking, doing the laundry, doing the dishes, cooking, that kind of stuff. Therefore I never listen to entire episodes: I start in the middle of some episode, switch to other podcasts while I do my no-brainer stuff and stop it in in the middle of an episode if I have to do other stuff. And yet. It’s a bit harder for me to press play on a two hour episode. And therefore these episodes just start accumulating until I unsubscribe.

With that out of the way, here’s what I’m listening to, and a one liner.

The Canon Puncture Show – I still like the show and listening to the show inspired me to two blog posts: 2010-07-21 Canon Puncture Game Advocate for ＯＤ＆Ｄ, 2010-06-29 Indie Campaigns.

Chronicles – New! A Podcast about Pathfinder RPG products; I often wonder how you can you call co-hosts by their Internet nicknames: Azmyth, Steel_Wind, are you sure? I’m interested in reviews of Pathfinder modules since I’m a subscriber but never read them hoping that somebody else will run them for me eventually. This podcast has a player and a gamemaster section. I listen to both because I can’t stop. At least now I have some spoilers and can pick one of the reviewed modules if I need any.

Fear the Boot – I’m not sure what attracts me to the podcast; in terms of roleplaying advice, I don’t always agree, Dan is long-winded and likes to hear himself talk, but the mix of different people and opinions matters, I think. The banter is good, and thus I often listen to this podcast first. It’s good entertainment.

Green Ronin Publishing Podcast – When was the last time they published an episode? I want to know more about Dragon Age. What I had heard made it seem like a new old school product. I’m not into the setting itself. Anyway. Episodes, where are you.

The History of Rome – I listen to a bunch of episodes at a time once every month or two. Pure history goodness!

In Our Time – science, philosophy and history on BBC4; still the best!

Material World – science on BBC4; not so sure about this one – episodes are a bit short on good background information, I think. Needs more meat! Do you know of alternatives?

Norman Centuries – more history, yay!

Roll For Initiative – I’m still listening to this AD&D 1st ed podcast; sound quality issues and the lengthy actual play segments introducing new monsters are tedious, but it’s good to get some perspective. How do they play, what modules do they play, what treasure do they hand out, what monsters do they use. I’m curious.

RPG Circus – an interesting mix of topics; I feel that sound has improved but sometimes audio issues persist. I feel bad for not sending more audio comments since they love them so much.

Save or Die – New! Another old school podcast sharing a host with the Roll For Initiative podcast. This one is about “classic” D&D and the subtitle mentions the old boxed sets. I like it so far!

Sounds! – I keep the episodes around and change their media type from podcast to music. Now I can have good radio anytime I want. Ignore the Swiss German hosts if you don’t speak the language. The music’s good and eclectic, independent rock and electronica stuff, weird folk and other hard to classify stuff.

Tales of an Old School Gamer – New! I just subscribed to this one. More old school D&D! The increasing number of dedicated podcasts makes me think that the OSR is alive and kicking. Then again, Wizards of the Coast might be embracing an edition agnostic approach that emphasizes the brand instead of the product. Think D&D Essentials vs. Mentzer Red Box D&D. In terms of brand, it’s all good. Anyway, old school stuff. I’m interested.

Thinking Allowed – social science on BBC4

The Voice of the Revolution – news about indie games that I don’t play

2d6 Feet in a Random Direction – still love them; episodes come out rarely

3.5 Private Sanctuary – I thought they had disappeared but realized a few weeks ago that they had silently dropped the feed I was subscribed to; now that everything is fixed again, I’m listening! It’s D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder RPG, game master and rules advice; look at Chronicles: Pathfinder Podcast if you need more Pathfinder goodness.

This time of the year is when This Just In…From Gen Con! goes on air again.
Canon Puncture Game Advocate for ＯＤ＆Ｄ

Once again I was listening to Canon Puncture – a podcast mostly about indie games – and they had Tavis Allison from The Mule Abides talking about OD&D – the version from 1974 where all weapons do 1d6 damage and where the rules are so confusing that they barely make sense at all. Tavis’ take is that this is the result of the tension between Arneson, who wanted his players to not know the rules at all and just use their imagination, and Gygax, who wanted to make the game accessible to other people. The result is, as he says, a D&D flavor “that is only vaguely reflected by the published text.”

I really liked the interview! He talks about the necessity of everybody reinventing the game: What does a wand of magic missile do? Apparently it’s not in the rules. The game encourages you not only to decide for yourself, but it also teaches you (by example) how to write random tables to use instead in order to surprise everybody at the table, DM included.

Arnold comments on the episode: “That is a strange and attractive take on the game.” [1] I agree! And yet – so liberating! I started to write a comment, but then decided to write a longer blog post instead.

I had a very similar reaction when I started reading about the older material. What a strange and attractive take on the game indeed! I had resumed gaming at the end of 2006 with D&D 3.5 and my first campaign was reaching levels twelve, thirteen, and more. I was getting sick of high-level play in my D&D 3.5 games. Pathfinder promised to be more of the same. They were going to fix some of the problems, but not the general problem: The game was getting too complicated for my taste! D&D 4th ed. was different but not in the way I wanted it to be. It was just a different tactical game. I stumbled upon the blogs of the Old School Renaissance (OSR). A few weeks back I collected some memorable quotes that defined the experience for me.

These old school blogs promised stuff I didn’t know I was looking for, but once I had read about them, there was no forgetting them:

As a DM I want to be surprised at the table. I don’t want to spend hours preparing my games. Recently I have started running my remaining D&D 3.5 games that way: I don’t want to spend more than one hour of preparation for every session. It works. It’s just not something that you’re being taught by the published books, modules, and adventure paths I’ve read. I learned it from the Old School Renaissance blogs.

If there’s a problem the characters face and the first thing players do is check their character sheet, then I don’t like it. Others get a kick out of the efficient use of their abilities to kick some ass, but somehow that leaves me cold. Too much chess for my wanna-be fevered brain!

If there’s too much character creation front-loaded (before the game starts), then I don’t like it. I like to discover who my character is in play. And since I didn’t front-load a lot of investment, I don’t mind loosing the character and starting a new one. The journey is the reward, no preparation needed.

I like to make shit up as we go. If there are a lot of rules, then suddenly things are more complicated. The classic example is the introduction of the Ride skill: Suddenly characters start falling off their horses because they’re failing their skill checks, where as in the old days, if you imagined your character to ride, he did. If you wanted a pet, and other people have the Handle Animal skill but you don’t, then you can’t have a pet. Yes, there are ways around it, but these ended up being small stumbling blocks that stymied my imagination.

I like the element of having to adapt with what I’m dealt with by Lady Luck. If the dice say I suck, I need to adapt. Such constraints set my imagination on fire. If I get to choose whether I suck or excel in a particular area (point-buy character creation), then nothing happens. I don’t get excited.

I felt that Tavis Allison captured all these elements quite eloquently in this interview. Recommended – unless you’ve already been reading the blogs of the Old School Renaissance in the last one or two years. If you haven’t and you’re looking for some inspiration, I have collected a large number of old school blogs on the Old School RPG Planet.

Tags: RPG Old School Podcast

3.5 Private Sanctuary Still There

As I was going through my list of podcasts that hadn’t updated in ages, I found 3.5 Private Sanctuary. I think a tear started to form, but then I decided to check their website.

Uh… They’re doing ok?

What’s going on?

I discovered that I was subscribed to this feed:

http://rcjrproductions.com/35ps/index2.php?option=com_podcast&feed=RSS2.0&no_html=1
– which doesn’t work

where as the show is going strong on this feed:

http://35privatesanctuary.com/index.php?option=com_podcast&view=feed&format=raw

Gah! How did this happen?

Oh well, I’m subscribed once again.

Tags: RPG Podcast

MJ Harnish posted his Bi-annual RPG Podcast Round-up again. I guess I don’t mind waiting a long time for new episodes if the quality is right.

Actual play podcasts would make sense for educational purposes. But for entertainment? Not so much.

Tags: RPG Podcast

Remember the 12 Byzantine Emperors podcast? The same guy is now putting out a similar podcast called Norman Centuries. I’m looking forward to it!

Via his brother [1].

Tags: Podcast History

Podcast Update

MJ Harnish writes about his Bi-annual RPG Podcast Round-up. Let me go through my podcasts as well… Most of them are about roleplaying games, obviously.

I usually listen to podcasts on my portable audio player, so I’m fine with low information density. If I’m at the computer while they’re playing, I will sometimes listen to a show two or three times in a row. That also means that I don’t care about video content.

I think that most interviews are sort of ok when they’re about the person behind a product. I find interviews with people trying to sell their product lame because we’re neither getting critical questions nor a review. It’s just advertising. I prefer a people story.

But now, on to the list:

All Games Considered – I was unsubscribed for a while but resubscribed as it got nominated for the Ennies

Atomic Array – the hosts are funny, but the games they talk about are often not games I’d enjoy, sometimes it’s a bit heavy on the marketing

Brilliant Gameologists – not being a native English speaker, I was surprised by the “raunchy humor and sexual innuendo” as MJ Harnish puts it; I guess I stay subscribed because I treat it as a curiosity

Fear the Boot – at the moment John is back, so it’s funny enough; I don’t care for Battletech but at least some of the hosts are with me, haha; I really liked the various DM styles they presented a while back

Green Ronin Publishing Podcast – I’m interested in the company even though I play none of their games; I liked the few they did, specially the one about their favorite games; they hardly ever publish new episodes but I don’t mind

Have Games, Will Travel – short episodes, the games not quite my style, I find monologues less entertaining than a group chat

The History of Rome – historical stuff; awesome – also consider 12 Byzantine Emperors

In Our Time – science and history, awesome BBC4 stuff

Kobold Quarterly – I guess this feed was replaced by the Open Design Podcast?

Midnight’s Lair – hasn’t published in a long time; I don’t even know what it was about anymore

Open Design Podcast – short segments by Monte Cook and others; I like it; doesn’t publish too often

Order 66 – haven’t heard anything, yet; I subscribed because of the Ennies

Pulp Gamer Inside Track – they had some interesting interviews in the past

RPG Circus – an interesting mix of topics; I’m often on the brink of sending in an audio comment; very new

Sons of Kryos – I loved them but then they switched to video and I can’t watch videos while walking or riding public transport; I don’t think they ever produced more than one video episode? Listen to the archives if you haven’t! Also note that Judd Kalrmann has appeared on the Cannon Puncture Show occasionally

The Canon Puncture Show – currently one of my favorite shows; I really like how they pick some of the recent RPG blog posts and discuss them – I can immediately relate since most often I’ve read the same articles and have my own related thoughts

Thinking Allowed – usually two interviews relating to recent books published; not quite sure whether I like it

This Just In… From GenCon – I listened to it while GenCon was going on

The Voice of the Revolution – hear about new indie games since I don’t read any of the fancy forums (Story Games? The Forge?)

2d6 Feet in a Random Direction – if they’re not talking too much about the shop, I enjoy the show very much – they made me buy Mongoose Traveller

3.5 Private Sanctuary – I don’t really like the class features where they delve into the rules, but I found it to be a cool source of thoughts on Pathfinder

Unsubscribed stuff still hanging around in my list: Dragons Landing, Gamer’s Haven, Geek Girls Rule!, Godzilla Gaming Podcast, Hackerfunk, The Podge Cast, SanD Worldbuilding 101, The Tome Show, TrapCast. Maybe if someone convinces me that they changed a lot, I’d resubscribe?

Older lists → click on the podcast category link below.

Update: I forgot to list the Canon Puncture Show!! Oops!

Tags: Podcast RPG

RPG Circus Inspiration

I was listening to the RPG Circus #4 and two of the segments reminded me of things on my mind as well.

3-D Terrain for use in your RPG Games – I usually prefer No Battlemap, but if a battlemap is used, I prefer to use the Dungeon Tiles by Wizards of the Coast. I like them better than using a whiteboard or laminated sheet of paper. Getting my fingers dirty and wiping the maps is not my thing. The drawback with the tiles is that they are overproduced. I don’t need fancy tiles. I don’t need tables, chairs, skulls, corpses, etc. Finding the right tiles takes far too long, and I don’t fancy preparing my tiles ahead of time. Maybe I should just get myself a sheet or two of 1 in. squared paper, cut the tiles I need, and have the pieces laminated. I wonder where I could do that here in Zürich.

This is what our battlemaps usually looks like:

Notice how we’re using cheap generic wooden tokens for most characters. No painted miniatures for most of us, and no paper miniatures either.

The Pros and Cons of Authorative DM vs decentralized game authority – Yesterday I talked with three of my players and learnt something about myself and them. I was basically trying to argue rules-light, and the first player gave me the same argument another commenter left some months back: “rules-heavy provokes arguments about the rules, rules-light provokes arguments about what would realistically happen in a situation.” [1]

The reason this player liked the rules was security. At first I thought it was a statement of mistrust, ie. security against a DM trying to screw players, but it turned out that the rules are what allow players to make tactical decisions. This rings true. And I am in fact not very tactically minded when I’m playing D&D – I much prefer strategic decisions such as where to pick a fight, when to pick fights, with whom to pick fights, instead of an actual tactical wargame.

The second player didn’t like their character being truly in danger. I replied that being in danger was what made the entire thing an adventure. I want my character to be in danger, and conversely I’m not too attached to it. If the character dies – hopefully with a big bang! – I can laugh and cheer and roll up a new one in no time. Unless I’m playing a game where character generation is a chore such as D&D 3.5 or Rolemaster and unlike Labyrinth Lord or classic D&D editions. That, in turn, is also afforded by my play-style where I do a lot of postparation instead of preparation. Nothing is wasted because I interpret events after the fact.

We also had a big laugh when I told them that my DM nightmare was imagining me as the party wanker, telling every player “oooh, you’re good! you’re awesome! oh yeah, you hit it! you HIT it! aahhhh, you’re so awesome!!”

So both of these players wanted to be more in control of their characters and I enjoy games were I’m continually surprised. It’ll be interesting to work this out. I’m curious.

(Also, Canon Puncture Show #74 talks about long background and mentions the issue of control. I love it when Judd Karlman makes an appearance.)

Tags: RPG RPG Circus Podcast

Some months ago I asked about Podcast recommendations (2009-01-30 RPG Podcast Recommendations Wanted). A few months later, here is my current list.

These I listen to as soon as they are out:

2d6 Feet In A Random Direction

3.5 Private Sanctuary

Atomic Array

Brilliant Gameologists

Fear the Boot

Green Ronin Publishing Podcast

The Canon Puncture Show

The History of Rome (actually this one I’m still catching up on because I want to listen all of the episodes)

The Voice of the Revolution

These I listen to occasionally:

In Our Timy With Melvyn Bragg

Pulp Gamer Inside Track

Podgecast

All Games Considered

Geek Girls Rule

TrapCast

I have some more in my feed but I don’t listen to them as regularly.

Tags: RPG Podcast ← check out how my taste has changed over time
