I have a Canon LiDE 25 scanner. Today it stopped working with OSX 10.4.11.
Weird. Maybe it never worked on my Mac Mini? I just tried it with the iBook and OSX 10.3 and it worked.

I think I have the same using OSX 10.5.2. Just works using vuescan software (http://www.hamrick.com/)

Hm… I feel bad spending more than USD 30 on something that should just work.

I just discovered that installing the very old version of ScanGear will work How amazing is that.
The details: I’m using OSX 10.4.11. If you follow instructions online and get the latest driver you’ll end up with a file called lide25osx11030en.dmg :sucks:; installing it will result in “no driver found” errors whenever you try to scan something (eg. when using the Gimp). If you get a really old version of the software you’ll end up with a file called s5703enx.dmg :ok:; installing it will result in a working !CanoScan !LiDE 25 scanner.
Hah, now that I no longer need my laptop to scan images, I have one more reason to install Ubuntu on it.
Well, to be honest, the TWAIN interface still doesn’t work such that Gimp and the !CanoScan Toolbox 4.9 will still complain about a missing driver. But at least you can run !ScanGear Starter 1.1E and get something scanned.
But then, greatest surprise of them all: If you installed the old driver first, you can then install the newer driver on top of it, and then everything works. This is amazing.
And it goes to show how tricky accurate testing actually is.

Hm. Running Mac OS 10.6.8, I find that I get the following error:
Cannot communicate with scanner Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed.
Damn you, Canon! Damn you!
Let me go through the instructions again… The download center has two files that are supposed to work with 10.6:
Let’s install them both and see!
And… it worked! I’m surprised. Yay!
